Bruins battle it out with tough Devils Lake team

Fargo South and Devils Lake both came into the game with 8-2 records and battled throughout the game before the Bruins pulled away to post a 72-49 win in the Bruin gym. Early on it was the Firebirds who looked to have the upper hand as they jumped out to an 18-8 lead midway through the opening period. The Devils Lake full court pressure forced a number of Bruin turnovers early that led to some easy baskets for the Firebirds in that stretch. Hannah Elshaug scored a number of baskets for Devils Lake en route to 10 first half points. However, the Bruins settled down and went on a nice run of their own from there. Amanda Schultz scored 7 straight points and assisted on the next 4 to pull South to within 22-19, and the Bruins took the lead on an Erica Everson basket inside at 23-22. And when Jasmine Moffett scored inside, the Bruins had put together a 16-2 run and had their biggest lead of the half at 33-24. South led 35-27 at halftime. After half, the Firebirds kept the game close as MacKenzie Wade's basket 3 minutes in cut the Bruin lead to 37-33. The teams continued to battle back and forth, but the Bruin adjustments at halftime allowed South to attack the Firebird's press. South picked apart the zone and the result was a number of easy baskets for the Bruins on offense. Meanwhile on defense, foul trouble moved Emily Livingood to the top of the Bruin zone, but the result was a very lanky Bruin zone defense that the Firebirds had trouble attacking. South steadily pulled away due to that solid offense/defense combination, and the result was the 23 point win that moves the Bruins to 8-0 in the EDC and 9-2 overall. It was a total team effort as 6 different Bruins hit double figure scoring, led by the 14 points of Emily Livingood.
