Bruins shake off slow start, defeat Deacons

Fargo South ground out a 55-38 win on Tuesday night over the Shanley Deacons in the Bruin home gym. In the first half, the Bruins seemed a bit sluggish, as they could never quite get enough ball pressure on the Deacons, and didn't seem to be attacking the basket or scoring in transition like they normally are able to do. Katie Felch and Raquel Wellentin provide the only real scoring punch for the Bruins in the opening period as the duo combined for 20 of South's 27 first half points. Shanley started strong, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before Katie Felch got the Bruins on the board with an offensive rebound putback basket nearly 3 minutes into the game. But the Bruins rattled off 13 straight points to make it a 13-6 lead, and the teams played fairly evenly the rest of the half, with South holding a 27-17 halftime lead. After halftime, both teams seemed to get into the flow of the game a little bit better. Amanda Schultz joined Felch and Wellentin in the scoring department, and the Bruins defense did a nice job of containing the Deacons to allow South to slowly pull away. South had their biggest lead of the game at 55-34 on a Raquel Wellentin freethrow, and the Bruins closed things out after that to post the 55-38 win. Katie Felch scored a season high 22 points. The win moves South to 10-1 in the EDC and 11-3 overall. Next action for the Bruins is a Saturday afternoon game in Wahpeton.
