Big first half propels Bruins to win

After a closely played opening 4 minutes which saw the 5th ranked Devils Lake Firebirds take an 11-7 lead, the Bruins exploded for a 30-4 run to take control of the game and rolled to an 85-47 EDC opening win on Tuesday night in the Bruin gym. The Bruins spread the wealth in that run as a number of players scored, most on some very nifty passing. South pushed the ball up the court in transition throughout the half, and saw each other very well on the break. The Bruins dished out 13 assists in the half, and had 3 different players in double figures by halftime, led by 15 first half points by Meghan Roehrich. The key to South's transition game though was their defense. The Bruins' full court and half court pressure forced 21 Firebird turnovers in the half, and led to both easy baskets for South and foul trouble for the Firebirds. The Bruins shot 56% from the field in the half and took a 49-19 lead into the halftime lockerroom. In the second half, both teams continued to play hard, even though the outcome was never really in doubt. Hannah Elshaug scored all 12 of her points for Devils Lake in the second half after battling foul problems in the opening half, while South continued to spread the scoring around. In the end, that first half run was just too much for the Firebirds to overcome, and South cruised to the big win. Meghan Roehrich dropped in a game high 27 points, many on some nice slashing drives to the basket, and also led South with 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Alley Fisher continued her great play so far this season with 19 points, while Siri Burck was her usual steady self, scoring 15 points and dishing out 5 assists. Jasmine Moffett also gave a great spark off the bench with 13 points and 8 rebounds. The win moves South to 1-0 in the EDC and 4-0 overall. Next action for South is next Tuesday when they take on Shanley in their last game before the Christmas break.
