South drops second straight game
Fargo South got dominated on the boards early, and the result was a 74-64 loss to Devils Lake on Tuesday night in the Firebird gym. South's usually solid defense gave up 40 first half points, partly on second chance opportunities by the Firebirds and partly on fastbreak opportunities. In that half, the Firebirds grabbed an amazing 18 offensive rebounds while the Bruins could only muster 13 total rebounds. That disparity made it difficult for South to mount any kind of run, and that combined with 13 first half turnovers let to a 40-33 halftime deficit. The Bruins were trying to cope with the loss of leading scorer Meghan Roehrich, who stayed home ill, and each Bruin made a contribution at some point. Alley Fisher scored 9 first half points which included a pair of three pointers and a three point play. Katie Felch also had a solid offensive night as well, hitting on a number of jumpers. In the second half, the Bruins made a quick run to start the half, scoring the first 4 points to make it 40-37, but the Firebirds answered with a run to regain control of the game. A series of turnovers in short order midway through the half made things very difficult for South. Siri Burck did her part trying to take over offensively, getting to the rim a number of times and finishing with a game high 20 points, but the Bruins could never get that key defensive stop when they needed one to tighten things up. Alley Fisher chipped in with 14 points, while Katie Felch and Jasmine Moffett each hit for 12. The loss drops South to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in the EDC and falls out of first place in the league into a tie for second with Fargo North. Next action for the Bruins is Saturday afternoon when South hosts West Fargo.
