South wins shootout over Knights
Fargo South held off a hot shooting Grand Forks Central team and posted a very hard fought 76-70 win over the Knights in the Central gym on Saturday night to remain undefeated on the season. In a very entertaining game that featured a number of key plays from both teams, South made just enough plays down the stretch to secure the win. In the opening half, Central took a quick lead at 5-4 on a Courtney Hammer three pointer, but that was quickly answered by a Meghan Roehrich three pointer, and the shootout was on. There were 7 lead changes and 4 ties in the opening half that featured 8 combined three pointers between the teams. At halftime, the Bruins held a 39-35 lead. The second half featured more of the same. Central opened up the half scoring the first 7 points which included a three pointer and a pair of freethrows from Rebecca Fee, who seemed to make things tough for the Bruins all night long. South answered that run though with a Raquel Wellentin hoop, as "Rocky" had her best offensive output night of the season, and then 4 points from Meghan Roehrich to retake the lead at 45-42. As was the case most of the night however, every time it seemed as though South looked like they were ready to stretch things out, the Knights made a big basket to keep things tight. This time Courtney Hammer hit again from downtown to tie the game again, but that was answered by Alley Fisher, who hit a three pointer on the Bruins end. The teams kept trading hoops until the Bruins built their biggest lead of the game at 60-51 on a steal and assist by Meghan Roehrich to Siri Burck with 9 minutes left to play. But that lead dwindled quickly as the Knights stayed red hot from outside, and Jessica Lyndsay three pointer with 5 minutes left made it just 62-60 South. On the game, the Knights hit on 9 of 16 three pointers. South again had the answer though, as Alley Fisher made a three point play on an offensive rebound basket, and Meghan Roehrich hit her third three pointer of the night to give the Bruins breathing room again at 71-63 with just under 4 minutes left. However Central again wouldn't go away, as they scored 7 straight points, which included Hammer's 4th three pointer of the game, and South held just a slim 71-70 lead with just under 2 minutes left, but that would be Central's last points of the game. Meghan Roehrich made 4 straight freethrows and the Bruins were able to get some critical rebounds in the closing seconds to secure the rough road win. Meghan Roehrich continued to pour in points for South, as she led everyone with 29 points, and also led the Bruins with 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals. South put 4 players in double figures for the second straight game. Alley Fisher hit for 15, while Raquel Wellentin and Jasmine Moffet both scored 13. The win moves the Bruins to 9-0 on the season, 5-0 in the EDC. Next action for South is next Friday night when the Bruins play at 7-3 Fargo North.
