Bruins finish off regular season with victory over North

South vs North part 2 had many of the same characteristics of part 1: a big and noisy crowd creating a great atmosphere, and two good teams going toe to toe. What was different this time around however was the outcome. South built a big lead early, then withstood a big Fargo North rally to post a 76-66 win over the Spartans in the Bruins home gym, the last game in that venue for seniors Siri Burck and Erica Everson. The teams traded baskets for the early part of the game, Alyssa Dehne giving the Spartans an 11-9 lead with 12 minutes to go. But the Bruins took over from there. Meghan Roehrich hit a step back three pointer in transition, and shortly after Raquel Wellentin hit a three from the corner to help give South a 16-11 lead. The Bruins continued to expand on that lead over the next few minutes. Meghan scored again on a fast break basket off a nice feed from Katie Felch after a steal and Alley Fisher hit a three pointer, and South grabbed a 33-16 lead. Then Katie Felch and Alley Fisher both hit three pointers in the last minute of the half to give the Bruins a 41-24 halftime lead. However, the second half saw a great rally by the Spartans. South maintained their lead for the first 5 minutes of the half, leading 45-26 on a Meghan Roehrich basket, but then North ran off a 15-0 run to get back into the game. Alyssa Dehne and Angie Waller combined for 13 of those 15, and a three point play by Dehne cut South's lead to just 45-41 with over 11 minutes to play. The Bruins were able to withstand the challenge though. A drive by Meghan Roehrich led to a foul, and a technical foul on North, and Meghan's subsequent 4 freethrows gave the Bruins a 49-41 lead. Meghan scored again shortly after to build the lead back to double figures at 51-41. North still would not go away though. An 11-4 run over the next few minutes made it a 56-52 game with 7 minutes to play, but that would be as close as the Spartans would get. Siri Burck and Meghan Roehrich then took over. Both players were able to slice into the lane and get to the rim for either baskets or freethrows, and when Meghan drove and dished to Alley Fisher for her third three pointer of the game, South had built the lead back up to 69-56 with just over 4 minutes left, and the lead did not hit single digits the rest of the way. South made their freethrows throughout the remainder of the game, and finished with the hard fought 76-66 win. Meghan Roehrich led all scorers with 25 points, joined in double figures by Alley Fisher with 18 and Siri Burck with 16. The Bruins finish the regular season with a 16-3 overall record, 11-3 in the EDC. South will take the #2 seed into next weeks East Region tournament and will play Grand Forks Central in the third game on Thursday which is at 6:30 PM at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.
