Bruins cruise past Shanley, advance to state tourney and East Region title game
Fargo South showed their versatility in consecutive nights so far this East Region tournament. On Thursday, the Bruins bombed in 9 three pointers to showcase their outside shooting game, and on Friday night, they only hit one shot from downtown, but were able to continually get into the lane with dribble drives to set up easy baskets, offensive putbacks, and freethrows. The result was a 75-48 win over Shanley, sending the Bruins into Saturday night's championship game and also punches their ticket to Bismarck and the Class A State Tournament next weekend. The Bruins defense was especially solid tonight, and allowed South to slowly and methodically pull away from the Deacons throughout the entire game, with the exception of a one minute stretch to close out the first half. After falling behind 7-6 3 minutes into the game, the Bruins got a driving basket by Meghan Roehrich to take an 8-7 lead, and never trailed in the game again. Jasmine Moffett scored inside on a beautiful pass from Alley Fisher as part of a 19-4 run which also included a three point play by Raquel Wellentin, a three pointer from Siri Burck, and a bunch of freethrows from Siri, Meghan, and Alley. South held a 35-22 lead with under a minute to play before halftime, but Shanley scored a pair of freethrows and Sophie Kenney nailed a three pointer right at the halftime buzzer to cut that lead to 35-27 at halftime. South however dominated the second half. The Bruins went on a 14-1 run over the first 5 minutes of the second half to push that lead out to 49-28, and kept the lead at 20+ the rest of the game. The Bruins got solid play out of everyone, but senior Siri Burck stepped up her game in a decisive 5 minute stretch of the second half where she was just not going to be denied, scoring points, grabbing rebounds, and dishing out assists. Meghan Roehrich continued her high scoring season, dropping in 24 points, which moved her past Jessica (Trautwein) Myxter into 2nd place on the all time leading scoring list with 1076 points, passing Trautwein's 1074. Meghan also pulled down 10 rebounds. Siri Burck also had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Joining that duo in double figure scoring was Alley Fisher, who chipped in 10. The win moves South to 18-3 and sets up the East Region title game with cross town rival Fargo North, who upset top ranked Red River. Game time is set for 6 PM.
