Bruins pick up home win over Wahpeton

Fargo South shook off an unexpected 45 minute delay in the start of their game due to a scheduling mixup, and managed to pick up an important home win on Tuesday night in the Bruin gym, defeating Wahpeton 77-40. The Bruins played well in stretches during the game, but didn't seem to really put things together until midway through the second half. South jumped out early on the Huskies as Meghan Roehrich started the game with a three point play, and the Bruins built a 14-4 lead with 5 different Bruins scoring in that run. Wahpeton kept the game close though thanks to a solid effort on the offensive boards. At halftime, the Huskies had as many offensive rebounds as the Bruins had defensive rebounds. South however just had too many offensive weapons, and an Alley Fisher three pointer gave South a 26-6 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the half, and the teams played even after that, with South taking a 40-21 halftime lead. In the second half, it was Wahpeton who won the first 3 minutes though, cutting that lead to just 41-27 on a Tawny Irwin bucket with 15 minutes on the clock. And with 10 minutes to play, the Huskies trailed by a 49-32 score. The Bruins finally found their game after that however, and with their defensive intesity level picked up, were able to get out in some transition baskets and put together a 22-0 run to take a commanding 71-32 lead that was capped off by a Siri Burck three pointer. South put 4 players in double figure scoring led by the 21 points and 8 rebounds of Meghan Roehrich. The win improves South to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in the EDC, and sets up a battle for first place on Friday night at Grand Forks Red River, with the winner of that game gaining the inside track on winning the regular season title.
