Bruins get back to winning ways
Fargo South got off to a fast start and didn't look back in an 86-62 victory on Satuday afternoon in the Bruins' gym against cross town foe West Fargo. The Bruins snapped a 2 game losing streak with the win, and did so in aggressive fashion. The Bruins put an emphasis on their defensive pressure this week in practice, and the result was a half court trap that seemed to take away the rhythm of the Packers early on and forced 30 Packer turnovers for the game. The Bruins used that pressure and generally just sped the game up to jump out to a quick 11-2 lead after a Siri Burck three pointer, then extended that lead to 39-12 over the course of the next 10 minutes of play, which included back to back beautiful driving layups by Meghan Roehrich and a three pointer by Alley Fisher. Jasmine Moffett and Raquel Wellentin were both steady inside as well, as the duo combined for 13 first half points. Six different Bruins scored in that run, which was important as the Bruins battled foul trouble the entire first half. Erica Everson came in off the bench to give good energy at the top of South's trapping zone, while the scoring got spread around to all the players. Despite missing 10 freethrows in the opening half, the Bruins still were able to maintain a 43-24 halftime lead, with Siri Burck scoring on an out of bounds play right as the halftime horn sounded. In the second half, Meghan Roehrich was continually able to get to the rim to draw fouls to help South keep their big lead, and Siri Burck had a big scoring half as well, putting in 11 of her 16 points after the break. All of it was needed too, as the Packers got hot from the three point line, hitting 9 threes in the game. But in the end, the Bruins just had too much firepower, placing 4 players in double figures, led by the 21 points of Roehrich. Siri Burck nearly had a triple double as she scored 16 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and dished out 9 assists. The win moves South to 10-2 overall, 6-2 in the EDC, and into a tie for second with Fargo North. Next action for the Bruins is next Friday when they host Shanley in a 6 PM boy girl double header game.
