South gearing up for post-season
The Fargo South Bruins hit the 80 point mark for the third straight game in posting an 82-65 win over West Fargo in the Packer gym Tuesday night, but the storyline seemed to be more about an extremely rare occurance that played out over the 36 minutes of basketball. Both senior Siri Burck and junior Meghan Roehrich hit the 1000 point career scoring mark in the course of the game, a feat seldom seen in basketball. Besides that magical scenario, Meghan's 1000 points came in a game where she broke her own single game scoring record, pouring in a school record 39 points. Siri came into the game with 985 points, and hit the 1000 point mark with 12 minutes left on a turnaround baseline shot. Meghan came into the game with 962 points and needed a school record night to hit 1000, which seemed like a tough task to do, but after a 22 point first half, it was well within reach. Meghan dropped in her 1000th point in typical fashion, driving through the lane and scoring in traffic with just under 3 minutes left in the game. Seeing the 2000 points in a Bruin uniform was a very exciting moment for players, coaches, and fans, and made for a memorable birthday for the writer of this article! As far as the game itself, as mentioned, the Bruins again found their game clicking. After West Fargo took a quick 5-2 lead, the Bruins took over. South scored 10 points in 3 trips down the floor without a three pointer in one stretch. Siri Burck and Meghan Roehrich both scored three point plays, and the next time down the floor, Raquel Wellentin had a chance for a three point play, but missed the freethrow, but Meghan was there to clean up the rebound and score a putback basket, giving South a 16-5 lead. After trading baskets for the next few minutes, a pair of Alley Fisher steals led to some great fast break baskets by Siri and Meghan, and the result was South's biggest lead of the half at 34-15. The Bruins capped off the solid first half when Meghan bombed in a 27 foot three pointer with just a few seconds before the halftime buzzer, giving the Bruins a 41-24 halftime lead. South then streched that lead out early in the second half. Meghan hit a pair of three pointers in the opening minutes, Erica Everson had a layup and inside basket, Jasmine Moffett scored on a couple of nice transition hoops, Raquel Wellentin made a nice inside basket, and overall, the Bruins just kept hitting shots. South held their biggest lead of the game at 77-51. In addition to all the hoopla during the game, the win secures the #2 seed in the East Region next week. South moves to 10-3 in the EDC and 15-3 overall. The Bruins finish up the regular season at home against Fargo North on Thursday, the last game ever on their homecourt for seniors Siri Burck and Erica Everson. Game time is set for 6 PM.
