Bruins hold off Firebird charges

Fargo South jumped out to an 11-0 lead, then withstood every run that Devils Lake made at them, and the result was an entertaining 72-65 win for South in their home gym on Friday night. One reason for the hot start of South was their activeness and aggressiveness. The Bruins got their hands on a number of passes, and grabbed rebounds for some nice fast break opportunities as McKenzie Roehrich got out ahead of the Firebirds defense a couple of times for a pair of breakaway layups. As would be the case the entire game though, the Firebirds were able to mount rallies to keep the game close. But the Bruins responded with a big play or plays every time Devils Lake made a charge. When Devils Lake cut the lead to 14-8, Maddie Erickson hit a three pointer and a pull up jumper to push the lead back to 19-8. When Devils Lake pulled to within 27-24 with just over 2 minutes before halftime, the Bruins got a basket on an Erickson drive, got a pair of freethrows from Brooklyn Klein, and then Anna Brakke had a steal and layup right before halftime to push South to a 33-26 lead at the break. The Bruins extended that lead in the second as Emily Stroup scored inside and then South got back to back three pointers from Maddie Erickson and Rachel Green and the Bruin had built a 41-28 lead with 15 minutes to go. Devils Lake didn't give up though, and over the next 5 minutes cut South's lead to 45-42, but South again responded with another Erickson three, and then back to back three point plays the old fashioned way by Erickson and Stroup which kept the Firebirds at bay. Devils Lake had one last charge in them as they got hot from the three point line, cutting the Bruin lead to just 62-61 with two and a half minutes left to play, but Rachel Green answered that 20 seconds later with another three pointer, and Maddie Erickson hit on 7 of 8 freethrows in the last 90 seconds to ice the win for South. It was a great effort all the way around for the Bruins as they placed 4 different players in double figures, led by 31 points from Erickson. Stroup had 15, Roehrich 12, and Green 10 for South. Stroup also notched another double-double as she was dominant on the glass with 21 rebounds. Erickson's overall game was also stellar as in addition to her 31 points, she also grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out 6 assists, and had 3 steals. The win moves South to 3-5 in the EDC. Next action for South is next Friday night when they travel to North High.
