Erickson shatters scoring record, Bruins get huge road win
The basket must have looked as big as a hula-hoop to Maddie Erickson on Friday night, as she poured in a school record 43 points to help Fargo South get a very important road win at Devils Lake which put control of the 6 seed back in their hands heading to EDC tournament time. Despite the hot shooting of Erickson though, a big key to the win for the Bruins were the many baskets South got from everyone else when they needed them. South got scoring from 8 different players on the night, and they needed all of them to help pull away from the Firebirds late in a very entertaining game with both teams making some great plays throughout. South jumped out to a 10-4 lead on 3 baskets by Erickson and an inside hoop by Emily Stroup, but the Firebirds also had a strong shooting first half and the teams battled back and forth the remainder of the half. South built a 23-18 lead on a Rachel Green three pointer with 10 minutes before half, one of 14 threes the Bruin made on the night which was a school record. The Firebirds countered with threes of their own, nailing 7 threes in the half, the last of which gave them a 34-31 lead with 1:30 to go before half. After another freethrow by Devils Lake, Maddie Erickson drained her 6th three of the opening half right at the halftime buzzer to make it a 35-34 Firebird lead at the half. In the second, Devils Lake scored first and built a 39-35 lead at the 15 minute mark, but the Bruins kept their poise and continued fighting hard. A basket by Anna Brakke was followed up by another three from Erickson and South had retaken the lead at 40-39, however that was short lived as the Firebirds knocked down a three on the next trip down the floor to take a 42-40 lead, but that was going to be the last time in the game the Bruins were behind. A driving basket by Erickson was followed by a freethrow by McKenzie Roehrich to give South the lead at 43-42 with 11 minutes to go. Erickson continued with her hot hand, scoring the next 7 points for South and pushing the lead out to 50-43 with 9 minutes to go. However, Devils Lake continued to battle and chipped the lead down to 51-48 with 7:45 to play. With a lot of attention being payed to Maddie Erickson on the defensive end, other Bruins then stepped up big time to really extend the lead. Roehrich had a freethrow, scored on a driving layup, then knocked down a three pointer in transition to give the Bruins a 57-48 lead and a ton of momentum with 6 minutes to go. After the Firebirds cut the lead to 57-52, South put together a great run. Kierstenn Aguilar hit a perimeter shot, Rachel Green and McKenzie Roehrich hit back to back threes, and Anna Brakke scored on a driving layup to push the lead to 68-54 with just under 4 minutes to go. Maddie Erickson put the game away with 6 freethrows sandwiched around an "ankle breaker" step-back three pointer, the last of her 9 threes on the night, and South secured the tough win on the road. Some big numbers were put up by South with the most obvious ones being the record setting scoring performance of Erickson and the Bruins team 3 point shooting, but hidden in that fireshow was a 22 rebound effort out of Emily Stroup. The win moves South to 7-11 in the league. Next action for the Bruins is Tuesday, which will also be senior night, when South hosts cross town foe Fargo North.
