Bruins earn a gritty win at Grand Forks Central

It was a hard-fought, physical game throughout, but the Bruins made a number of key plays in the second half to stretch out the game late and come away with a 56-48 win in the Knight's gym on Tuesday night. Emily Stroup got South going early as she rattled off 9 of South's first 12 points in the game to give the Bruins a 12-9 lead in a first half that was closely played the entire 18 minutes. A Rachel Green three pointer and freethrows by Maddie Erickson gave the Bruins a 17-12 lead halftway through the opening half, but the Knights kept it close. South took a 20-15 lead on a Kierstenn Aguilar three pointer and then 2 freethrows by Stroup gave South a 22-17 lead with 5:30 to play in the opening half, but unfortunately for South, those would be the last points they would score before halftime. Central closed out the half on a 9-0 run to take a 26-22 halftime lead. In the second half though, the Bruins played with a ton of heart and determination. Rachel Green scored a three and a two in the first minute of the half to grab the lead back for South at 27-26. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes as Central held a 30-29 lead, but a fast break basket by Erickson was followed up by another one by McKenzie Roehrich on a nice outlet pass from Stroup, and South had a 33-30 lead with 14 minutes to play and despite the game staying close until the final minute, the Bruins would not give up the lead again the rest of the way. South had a number of big plays in those last 10 minutes, including a Maddie Erickson three pointer that came after an offensive rebound and kick-out by Emily Stroup which gave the Bruins a 42-36 lead, but the clincher was a great drive into the lane by Erickson who lobbed it up to Stroup who finished the basket and got fouled. Her freethrow to finish off the three point play with 50 seconds to play and pushing South's lead to 51-42. Freethrows in the closing minute kept the game out of reach, and South held on for the 8 point win. Emily Stroup was a stat monster again, scoring 17 points and grabbing 23 rebounds. Maddie Erickson had another nice floor game, scoring 18 points and dishing out 6 assists, grabbing 4 boards with 3 steals, all while only having 1 turnover. The win moves the Bruins to 5-5 in the EDC as South has won 5 of their last 7 games. Next action is Tuesday night when they host #3 ranked Red River.
