Bruin find tough times at Red River

Fargo South continued their struggle out of the gate on the 2016 season, dropping an 83-48 decision at Red River on Friday night. The teams played even for the first 9 minutes of the opening half as a Rachel Green three pointer made it a 14-13 Rider lead midway through the half, but Red River then went on a 16-0 run over the next 4 minutes to take a big 30-13 lead with just under 6 minutes to play before half. However, South managed to get back within shouting distance as Maddie Erickson dropped in a three pointer and got three more on a hoop and a foul to make it 32-21 with 2 minutes before halftime. Offensive rebounds by Red River were a major problem for the Bruins all half, and the Riders pushed that to a 37-22 halftime lead. Erickson had 12 points at the half to pace the Bruins as she looked to carry the scoring burden for South. The Bruins then started out the second half nicely, as Emily Stroup scored inside on the first possession of the half and was fouled, which was a milestone basket for Stroup as that bucket put her over the 1000 point mark for her career. That hoop was followed up by a three pointer by Rachel Green, and South had life, trailing 37-27 just a minute into the second half. However, the Riders again hit the offensive glass, and forced a number of turnovers which sparked another run, this time an 11-0 run to push the lead out to 48-27 and essentially put the game out of reach for the Bruins. Maddie Erickson led South with 21 points while Emily Stroup added 15. Adding injury to insult, South guard McKenzie Roehrich went down with an injury midway through the first half and did not return for the Bruins. Next action for South is Tuesday night when they travel to Wahpeton, who is off to a 3-1 start in the conference.
