Bruins drop hard fought opener
Fargo South kicked their season off on the road, playing a tough Moorhead team on Friday night, and came away from a very hard fought, competitive game on the short end of a 62-58 score. South got off to a hot start, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead on a three point play by Emily Stroup and a fast break basket by McKenzie Roehrich. The Bruins then stretched that lead out to 19-9 on a great inside move by Stroup with 11 minutes to play. From that point on, both teams traded runs - basically for the rest of the game. The Spuds' Sam Haiby took off and led Moorhead on a 13-3 run to tie the game up at 22-22 with 6 minutes to play in the half. South retook the lead on a nice pass from Kierstenn Aguilar to Natalie DuBois for a 24-22 lead, but the Spuds would then rattle off the next 8 points to take a 30-24 lead. However, 3 freethrows by the Bruins McKenzie Roehrich and Brooklyn Klein, and a Maddie Erickson drive and score, knotted up the game again at 30-30 with 2 minutes to play before half. However a pair of turnovers cost the Bruin in the final minutes, and the Spuds took a 37-31 lead into halftime. In the second half, South again scored the first 5 points, coming on a three pointer by Aguilar and a nice pass play from Erickson to Stroup, making it 37-36 just a couple minutes into the second half. The teams continued to battle back and forth the entire second half, with both teams making nice plays. Moorhead took a 52-46 lead on a putback basket, but the Bruins answered right back with a fastbreak basket by Roehrich and a three pointer from Erickson, and South trailed only 52-51 with 7 minutes to play. South had their first chance to take the lead back on their next possession, but had a shot just rattle off. That was a theme in the last 5 minutes, as South had 4 different chances to take the lead, but could not convert on any of them. In the end that proved to be just enough for Moorhead to hang on to the lead. The Spuds began to go into their delay game with 2 minutes to go, holding a 59-55 lead. South still had a couple chances to tie the game up after cutting the lead to 59-56, but again, couldn't quite get over the hump. A number of positives for South though for the first game of the year. The Bruins played with a lot of energy all night long, and never gave in, many times cutting 5 or 6 point leads back to 1 or 2 to keep the game tight right up until the final buzzer. Emily Stroup led the Bruins with 20 points and 20 rebounds, and was joined in double figures by Maddie Erickson with 15 and McKenzie Roehrich with 11. For the Spuds, Sam Haiby had 24 while Brooke Tonsfeldt had 22. Next action for South is Tuesday night at home, when they open up EDC play by hosting the defending state champs, the Shanley Deacons.
