Emotionally draining week ends with a Bruin win

Fargo South dealt with a wide range of events and emotions all week long, but at the end of the week, put together a nice game and came away with a 69-44 win up at Fargo North on Friday night. It was "throwback" night for South as well, and the Missouri gold uniforms sported by the Bruins seemed to work just fine as South got out to a big lead early on. After trading baskets over the opening couple of minutes, South got rolling when Emily Stroup and Maddie Erickson both had a three point play conversion, and Erickson followed that up with a three pointer, and South had build a 14-5 lead five minutes into game action. South's defense stayed solid for most of the game, something they've been working hard at trying to improve over the last few weeks. The Bruins continued to put pressure on North as a rebound basket by Kaycee Froysland and a Kierstenn Aguilar jumper, along with freethrows from Stroup and Erickson pushed the lead out to 30-13 with 6 minutes to go before halftime. Maddie Erickson was in a great scoring rhythm the whole first half, dropping in 21 of her game high 26 points in the opening half as South built a 36-23 halftime lead. In the second half, the Bruins were able to get off to a great start, something that was important for them to do, by rattling off the first 12 points. McKenzie Roehrich started it out with a breakaway layup on a nice long outlet pass from Stroup, then returned the favor by hitting Stroup underneath on the next possession for a basket. Maddie Erickson had a nice slicing drive through the lane for a hoop, and Stroup scored another pair of baskets on post up position inside, and the Bruins had built their biggest lead of the night at 48-23 with 14 minutes to go in the game. The teams went back and forth the rest of the night, but the Spartans were never able to cut that lead to any closer than 20 points and South held on for the win. Emily Stroup continued her fantastic play inside as she finished with 21 points and 20 rebounds while also blocking 7 shots. South put 3 players in double figures as Roehrich scored all of her 10 points in the second half to join Erickson and Stroup in that category, but the Bruins got scoring from 8 different players to help key the win. South also continued their recent stretch of aggressive play which has earned them numerous trips to the freethrow line over the last few games. The Bruins followd up last game's 31 attempts with 27 more tonight, a big reason the Bruins won both games. The win moves South to 4-5 in the EDC and gives the Bruins a chance to level their record on Tuesday night when they travel to Grand Forks Central.
