Bruins clinch 6 seed with win over Spartans
Fargo South had a bit of a tough time getting the ball to go in the basket on Tuesday night despite getting some good looks, but their defense carried the day and the result was a 60-27 win over cross town foe Fargo North in the Bruin gym. The win secures the #6 seed for the EDC tournament, giving the Bruins a home game on Saturday against the #11 seed Valley City Hi-Liners. The 27 points allowed was the fewest given up by a South team since the 24-1 team of 2008-09 only allowed 24 points in a game vs Valley City. It didn't start out looking like that would be the case for the Bruins on senior night, as the Spartans jumped out to a 10-6 lead 6 minutes into the game. From that point on however, the Bruins finished out the half strong. South went on a 34-5 run over those last 12 minutes, which included some fast break hoops, a great backdoor pass/finish from Emily Stroup to Rachel Green, a couple of driving baskets by McKenzie Roehrich, and 4 three pointers from Maddie Erickson. Key the run though was the Bruins' defensive effort. Emily Stroup had 6 blocked shots in the first half that really bottled up the inside, which allowed the Bruins' guards to get out and pressure hard on the perimeter. South ended up with 13 steals and 10 blocked shots on the night, along with a number of altered shots and tipped passes. Overall, it was just a great team defensive effort. At the half, South led 40-15. In the second half, South had a number of good looks at the basket over the first 8 minutes of play, but most of them just couldn't quite find the bottome of the net. To their credit though, the Bruins did not allow the frustration of not converting baskets to carry over to their defensive end where they continued to make it tough for the Spartans to score. After making just one hoop in the first 8 minutes of the second, Emily Stroup finally broke the ice with an inside basket, and that seemed to open things up the rest of the way. Another great positive for South was their freethrow shooting. South went 20-22 on the night in one of their best performances at the line all season. In the end, South placed 3 players in double figure scoring, getting 20 from Maddie Erickson, and 14 each from Emily Stroup and McKenzie Roehrich. Stroup also notched another double-double with 14 boards, and almost had a triple-double as she blocked 9 Spartan shots on the night. South closes out the regular season on Thursday, hosting Grand Forks Central, then will start post-season on Saturday.
