Bruins hang tough, drop game to Deacons

Fargo South played well for most of the game but had a couple of tough stretches which led to a 78-54 Deacon win on Saturday afternoon. Shanley, winners of 60 games in a row and the state's top ranked team, has been dominating opponents all season long, but South held their own for most of the first half. The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an Anna Brakke layup to start the game, and then battled the Deacons for the games first 9 minutes. Rachel Green hit a three and scored on a nice pass from Emily Stroup on a press breaker hoop. Stroup went to work inside and scored 3 consecutive baskets on offensive rebound putbacks. At the 9 minute mark Shanley held a slim 12-11 lead as the Bruins defense did a good job of slowing down the Deacon offense. However a quick flurry of turnovers allowed Shanley to go on an 11-2 run to stretch their lead out to 23-13 with 7 minutes to go before half. But as has been the case all week, the Bruins did not let things get out of hand and regrouped for the remaining 7 minutes to play the Deacons even over that stretch. A Maddie Erickson drive and a three pointer cut the lead to 23-18 with 6 minutes to play, and then McKenzie Roehrich had 5 points down the stretch and South trailed 37-27 at halftime. The decisive stretch of the game though came in the first 2 minutes of the second half. Shanley started with the ball, scored, and then the Bruins turned the ball over on 3 straight possessions, all of which led to a Shanley basket, and just like that the Bruins were facing a 45-27 score. South again held off lettting the game get away from them though and battled with the Deacons the rest of the way. Rachel Green hit a pair of threes in the second half, and McKenzie Roehrich was able to get some dribble drive scores over the next few minutes. A driving layup by Emily Stroup with 9 minutes to go cut the Shanley lead to 59-45 and South got a stop on the next possession, but couldn't cut into the lead on their end. With 4 minutes to go the game was 67-52, but the Bruins would only get 2 freethrows the rest of the way, and the Deacons finished up with the 24 point win. South had 4 girls in double figures led by the 16 points of McKenzie Roehrich with Emily Stroup chipping in another double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds while Rachel Green and Maddie Erickson had 11 and 10 points respectively. South falls to 6-11 in the EDC and will get some well deserved rest for a few days before heading up to Devils Lake on Friday night.
