Bruins clicking on way to win over Sheyenne
Fargo South was clicking on all cylinders in the opening half as they rolled up 46 first half points en route to a solid 75-57 win over the visiting Sheyenne Mustangs on Monday night in the Bruins home gym. For the second game in a row, the Bruins' press led to a number of baskets to really set the tone for the game as South jumped out to a 7-0 start, thanks to some nice passing between Emily Stroup and McKenzie Roehrich. Sheyenne cut the lead to 9-5 with 13 minutes left in the half, but that's when South's Maddie Erickson got her offensive game cranked up. Maddie got on a hot streak, scoring 9 straight points in the span of about 2 minuts for South as the Mustangs had a tough time staying in front of her, and the Bruins led 18-5 with 11 minutes left. The Mustangs then got on a nice shooting streak and clawed their way back in the game, trailing just 20-17 at the 7 minute mark, but again the Bruins had an answer. Emily Stroup scored on a pair of baskets including a nice steal and layup, and Maddie Erickson again hit a hot streak and the Bruins were able to stretch out to a 45-36 halftime lead. Erickson was red hot the whole first half, pouring in 21 first half points, and that was nearly matched by the 16 first half points by Emily Stroup, who also grabbed 10 first half boards for a first half "double-double". In the second half, with the Mustang defense trying to slow down Erickson, McKenzie Roehrich got her rhythm going on offense too, scoring on 3 nice drives to the basket and also getting fouled a number of times. One of those driving baskets gave South a 60-40 lead midway through the period, which was followed up by an offensive rebound putback basket by Emily Stroup, which was her 999th career rebound. Emily followed that with a blocked shot and rebound on the next possession which led to McKenzie Roehrich freethrows, and South was celebrating their first ever player to hit for 1000 points and 1000 rebounds. Those freethrows gave South their biggest lead at 64-40, and the Bruins were able to maintain a comfortable double-digit lead the rest of the way. Maddie Erickson led all scorers with 29 points, followed by Stroup with 24 points and Roehrich with 19. The win moves the Bruins to 2-3 in the EDC as they head into break. Next action for South is December 29th when they travel to West Fargo to take on the Packers.
