South gets in the win column

Fargo South cranked up their defensive pressure and rode some hot shooting from Rachel Green to notch their first win of the season, a 73-59 win over Valley City on Friday night in the Bruin gym. The Bruins started hot then held off a couple of different charges by the Hi-Liners throughout the game to post the win. South jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead as Maddie Erickson went coast to coast and got fouled, and Rachel Green hit a three and had a steal and fast break layup in that run. Valley City got back into it from the freethrow line though and trailed 9-8 with 12 minutes left in the half. But as would be the case all night, South responded every time they needed to. McKenzie Roehrich had a pair of freethrows and a steal and layup sandwiched around a Maddie Erickson three pointer and a nice pass from Emily Stroup to Anna Brakke for a basket, pushing the lead back to 20-10 and forcing a Hi-Liner time-out. That lead stretched to 24-10 on an Erickson driving basket midway through the half. South was very active on defense, getting a number of tipped passes and steals, and just generally disrupting the flow of Valley City. South would end the game with a season high 11 steals. Valley City wasn't about to roll over though, as they went on a 17-2 run over the next 5 minutes. In that run, the Bruins had a number of different shots go halfway down but spin out and just coulnd't break the Hi-Liner streak. A basket by Valley City with 3:50 to go before halftime gave the Hi-Liners a 27-26 lead, their only lead of the game, which was short lived as on the next possession Kierstenn Aguilar hit a pull up jumper in the lane giving South a 28-27 lead and starting an 11-0 run to close the half, highlighted by a Roehrich reverse layup and a Rachel Green three pointer, and South took a 37-27 lead into halftime. In the second, South built the lead up to 44-31 before Valley made another run, this time cutting the lead to just 51-48 with 7 minutes to play. But South was not going to let this one slip away. 5 different players scored in a 14-0 run that pushed the lead up to 65-48 with 3:33 left on the clock. Green had a pair of key three's in that strech on her way to a team high 20 point night. South hit their biggest lead of the night when Green knocked down her sixth three of the night, pushing the lead to 68-50 with 2 minutes to play. Maddie Erickson had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Emily Stroup had a fantastic floor game...14 points, 17 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists, and 5 blocked shots. Kierstenn Aguilar also had one of her best games, scoring 10 points and just making a number of nice plays, while McKenzie Roehrich returned from injury by hitting for 10 points as well. Anna Brakke and Brooklyn Klein also played their part, playing aggressive defense and just playing steady. The win improves South to 1-3 in the EDC and had a short turnaround, hosting West Fargo Sheyenne on Monday night.
