South gets big road win

It was one of those kind of nights for Fargo South where everything they did seemed to be working, and as a result, put together their largest point total of the year, coming away with an 86-36 road win in Valley City on Tuesday night. South got hot early from the three point line as Maddie Erickson, Rachel Green, and McKenzie Roehrich all hit from deep early as the Bruin raced out to a 17-3 lead early on. The first half seemed to be guard oriented, as the Bruins connected for 8 threes in the first half from 3 different players. That hot shooting, coupled with some nice fast break baskets, which included a "thread the needle" pass from Erickson to Roehrich, allowed the Bruins to control the opening half. The Bruins also had an improvement in their defensive rebounding, one of the points of emphasis in practice, and also didn't turn the ball over often, with only 5 turnovers in the opening half, another pre-game emphasis. At half, South already had 3 players in double figures led by the 16 from Erickson, and the Bruins led 45-17 at the half. In the second half, South turned to their inside game as Emily Stroup got going on some mismatch opportunities to both score, draw fouls, and get to the freethrow line. Stroup got to the line 11 times for the game, and her defensive presence showed with 6 blocks and 17 rebounds to go along with her 19 points to become the 4th Bruin in double figure scoring. South also got a nice spark from their bench. Brooklyn Klein and Natalie DuBois dropped in 6 and 5 points respectively to lead the bench scoring, while Kierstenn Aguilar played steady without doing a bunch of scoring. All in all, it was just a nice overall effort for everyone involved. Erickson led all scorers with 23 points, joined in double figures by Stroup with 19, Roehrich with 17, and Green with 14. The 11 three pointers the Bruins ended up with was the second best effort all time for South, falling just short of the record 13 threes in a game set in 2009. The win moves South to 6-7 in the EDC. Next action is Saturday afternoon when they play at Sheyenne.
