Fargo South knew what was at stake on Saturday night and with their season on the line, came through with a methodical victory against the Valley City Hi-Liners, posting a 61-33 win in the Bruins gym. Both teams played well early on, as South jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Rachel Green hit a pull up jumper and McKenzie Roehrich scored a basket and a freethrow, but Valley City chipped away, and at the 10 minute mark, the Bruins held a slim 10-8 lead. However, South then ramped up their defensive effort, as has been the case for the last few weeks. The Bruins went on a 10-3 run fueled by a three point play by Emily Stroup and a three pointer by Green as the Bruin built a 20-11 lead, then held on for a 27-17 halftime lead. In the second half though, South began to stretch things out. Back to back three pointers by Roehrich and Maddie Erickson on the first 2 possessions of the half gave South some breathing room at 33-17, and the Bruins kept things going from there. Stroup scored another three point play, Erickson sliced through the lane for a hoop, and Stroup hit Green on a great give and go lay-up, and South had built a 43-21 lead halfway through the final frame. South's defense kept the Hi-Liners from cutting into that lead, as the Bruins forced a number of turnovers and batted passes out front, and Emily Stroup controlled the inside game as she had 6 blocked shots, 5 of them coming after halftime, and grabbed 19 rebounds. That defensive effort by the Bruins kept the H-Liners at bay, and South was able to control the remaining minutes of the half to post the win. The Bruins had 3 girls in double figures, as Stroup and Erickson each had 18 points while Roehrich dropped in 14. With the win, South advances as the #6 seed and will play at #3 Davies on Tuesday night.
