Bruin take a tough loss at Wahpeton

Despite playing hard and seeing a ton of positive things happen, the Bruins had the game slip away in the last 3 minutes in a hard fought 48-46 loss down in Wahpeton. The game was closely contested the whole night with the biggest lead of the game coming early as the Huskies got out to a 13-5 lead with 10 minutes to play. It wasn't that South wasn't playing well, they just had a tough time getting the ball to go in and had a number of shots spin out. That lead didn't last long for Wahpeton though, as Maddie Erickson scored 8 straight points over the next 2 minutes to tie the game up at 13-13. The Bruins took the lead with 5 minutes to go on a basket inside by Emily Stroup at 17-15. The teams battled back and forth from there the rest of the half, with the Huskies taking a slim 23-22 lead into halftime. At the start of the second, the Huskies scored first to take a 25-22 lead, but the Bruins then went on a 9-2 run, keyed by a pair of offensive rebound putback baskets by Emily Stroup and a three pointer by Rachel Green gave South a 31-27 lead with just over 10 minutes to play. The last 10 minutes the teams went back and forth with both sides making important plays. After falling behind 35-31, Maddie Erickson went coast to coast on a basket, hit a pull-up jumper, and scored on a great pass from Emily Stroup to make the score 37-35 with 7 minutes to play. After a Wahpeton basket, Erickson found Stroup on a transition three pointer, and South had a 40-37 lead with just over 5 minutes to play. The Bruins had multiple chances to expand on that lead, but again could not get a shot to fall. Wahpeton star Tylee Irwin scored again to make it 40-39 South but Maddie Erickson had the answer, scoring on a driving basket and drawing a foul to push the lead to 43-39 with 3:35 on the clock. Unfortunately for South, the were not able to run down a couple of missed shots by Wahpeton, and the Huskies retook the lead at 44-43 on a freethrow, but a long outlet pass from Stroup to Erickson led to a layup which gave South a 45-44 lead with 2 minutes to go. But South had a foul and again missed out on securing a rebound and Wahpeton got to the freethrow line and built a 47-45 lead. On the next possession Rachel Green found Stroup inside and was fouled with her shot rolling around the rim but just dropping out. Emily converted one of the freethrows to make it 47-46. The Bruins then forced a turnover with 18 seconds to play, but turned it right back over to Wahpeton with 11 seconds to play and was forced to foul. Irwin made 1 of 2 freethrows for the Huskies, setting up a potential game tying or winning shot, but a three pointer at the buzzer in which there was a tough no-call, rimmed out and the game was over. Maddie Erickson had a great floor game for South, finishing with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Stroup joined Erickson in double figure scoring with 14 points, and also grabbed 15 rebounds. In addition, Maddie Erickson hit a couple of milestones in the game. Her pair of three pointers passed Meghan Roehrich for second all time in career three pointers made with 114. Her 24 points shot her past both Jessica Trautwein and Alley Fisher into 4th all time in scoring, now with 1088 points. The tough loss drops South to 0-3 in the EDC and the Bruins now host Valley City on Friday night.
