Bruins sluggish in loss to Packers

Despite getting off to a good start and leading for the opening 8 minutes of the game, the Bruins were a step slow defensively all night and the result was an 84-57 loss in the Packer gym on Tuesday night. Maddie Erickson, McKenzie Roehrich, and Kierstenn Aguilar all scored in the opening minutes to give South a quick 6-0 lead and Rachel Green hit her first 3 three pointers and the Bruins led 15-6 just 4 minutes into the game. Unfortunately, at that point the tide began to turn for the Packers. West Fargo was the aggressor the rest of the night, continually driving to the basket to get easy looks on both the inital drives and on offensive rebound putbacks. West Fargo tied the game up at 17-17, and then after an Aguilar three gave South a 20-17 lead, the Packers went on a 24-5 run over the next 5 minutes to take a 41-25 lead with 2 minutes to go before halftime. A Maddie Erickson three pointer and some freethrows late made it a 45-32 Packer lead at halftime. In the second half, the Bruins played a little better, cutting the lead to 45-36 right off the bat, and then maintaining that distance. An Emily Stroup basket inside with just over 11 minutes left in the game made it a 55-45 Packer lead, but again, West Fargo was able to slice to the basket and went on a 12-3 run to push the lead to 67-48 which basically put the game out of reach. Maddie Erickson led South with 17 points and Rachel Green joined her in double figures with 14. The loss drops South to 2-4 in the EDC. Next action for the Bruins is next Tuesday when they host Fargo Davies.
