Bruins drop home game to Packers
Fargo South had a tough time adjusting to the size of West Fargo early on and numerous turnovers in the first few minutes let the Packers jump out to a 10-0 lead after 4 minutes of play, but the Bruins battled back into it before finally falling 61-53 on Tuesday night in the Bruin gym. After that 10-0 deficit to start the game, Maddie Erickson finally broke the ice for the Bruins with a three point play, which was followed up by 5 points from McKenzie Roehrich, and South had fought back into it at 10-8. West Fargo then stretched that back to 15-8, but a three pointer by Rachel Green and an inside basket by Emily Stroup cut the lead to 15-13 with 5 minutes to play in the half. The teams went back and forth those last 5 minutes with the Packers taking a 24-18 lead into halftime. South then came on strong in the second half. Green and Erickson both hit early three pointers, Erickson had another three point play followed by a coast to coast basket, and South trailed 31-29 with 14 minutes to go. The Bruins then kept that momentum going as Green hit a three pointer to give South their first lead of the game at 32-31 and that was followed by a great fast break pass from Erickson to Stroup giving South a 34-31 lead and forcing a Packer timeout with 13 minutes to go. West Fargo then started to use their size to hit the offensive boards and retook the lead at 35-34, but a Roehrich steal and layup gave the lead back to South at 36-35 with 11 minutes to go. Unfortunately for the Bruins, that was going to be their last lead of the game. The Packers rattled off 13 straight points, which included a pair of three point plays by the Packers on offensive rebounds, and the Bruins trailed 48-36 with 6 minutes to go. South didn't fold though and the Bruins clawed their way back into it. A freethrow by Stroup, another Erickson three pointer, and an inside basket by Stroup cut the lead back to 49-44 with just over 4 minutes left, but South couldn't quite close the gap. South trailed 59-53 in the closing seconds, but the Packers hung on, scoring the final basket and taking the game 61-53. Erickson and Stroup both had 15 points for South. The loss drops the Bruins to 6-9 in the EDC. Next action is at Davies on Thursday.
