Bruins rally for win over Knights

Fargo South played probably their grittiest 10 minutes of basketball to close out the game against the Grand Forks Central Knights on Friday night and posted a hard fought 51-43 win in South's last home game of the season. The Bruins fell behind 7-0 to start the game and played from behind for most of the night as the Knights came out playing very scrappy basketball. In a sign of things to come though, Adie Wagner got the Bruins going with a long 3 pointer and a driving runner in the lane. Emmerie Beyer and Paige Schroeder each scored a basket for the Bruins in the half, with Schroeder's coming off a nice feed from Alice Carlson. Another 3 by Wagner gave the Bruins a brief 17-15 lead with 5 minutes to go before half, but the Knights would answer with 8 straight points to take a 23-17 lead right before halftime. However, Wagner continued her red hot first half, nailing a long three pointer right before the halftime buzzer, her 4th of the half, to cut the lead to 23-20 at halftime. Wagner had 14 of South's 20 points at the break. In the second half, the Bruins again dug themselves a hole, and things did not look good as they trailed 36-24 with 10 minutes to play in the game. South didn't give in though and put together a really nice stretch of basketball to close out the game. The intensity level picked up on defense and South was able to string together a series of "stop-score-stops" that helped them claw back into the game. The rally started on a great pocket pass from Wagner to Maggie Boese inside for a layup and then Wagner followed that up with a bomb from way downtown on a fastbreak opportunity. That was followed up shortly by another inside basket by Boese, this time on a feed from Carlson, who led the Bruins with 5 assists on the night, and just like that it was 36-31 and the Bruins were back in it. The teams battled back and forth and the Knights held a 40-37 lead with 5 minutes to go. Anna Brakke cut into that lead on a nice feed from Wagner on a sideline out of bounds play to make it 40-39. After a Knight freethrow made it 41-39, Sami Hoselton hit a baseline jumper in transition to tie the game at 41-41 with 3 minutes to go and that was followed up shortly afterwards by a tip-in putback by Paige Schroeder to give the Bruins their first lead of the second half at 43-41 with just over 2 minutes to play. South knocked down most of their freethrows late to close out the game. The Bruins finished the game on a 27-7 run over the last 10 minutes to earn the win. Adie Wagner led all scorers with 24 points.
