Fargo South fell behind big early, clawed back into the game, but then did not defend well enough against one of the top teams in the league and the result was a 78-42 loss on Friday night in Red River. In a sign of things to come, the Bruins let the Riders get behind them early and often to start the game, digging themselves an 18-2 deficit 6 minutes into the game as the Bruins simply did not defend well. After a pair of early time-outs, the Bruins did show some signs of life though and were able to get back into the game. Emmerie Beyer scored 6 quick points off the bench as the Bruins full court pressure was able to string together some deflections and steals, and at the 9 minute mark, South had chipped away and made it a 22-12 score. Later on, Brynn Nelson scored on an offensive rebound basket, cutting the lead to single digits at 27-18 with 6 minutes to go, and with under 5 minutes left the Bruins trailed just 29-19, which was about as good as they could have hoped for after their tough start. However, South then turned the ball over 5 straight times, most of which led to easy baskets for the Riders, and Red River closed the half on a 14-0 run to take a 43-19 lead into halftime. In the opening half, the Riders only made 2 shots from outside the lane, a three pointer early, and a three pointer right before halftime. Every other shot was from 1-3 feet away. Unfortunately for South, that trend continued in the second half as the Riders sliced the Bruins defense, and every single basket the Riders made in the second half was from 3 feet or closer. That lack of defensive stopping power allowed the Riders to pull away throughout the half, and they cruised to the 36 point win. Beyer led the Bruins with 15 points, while Paige Schroeder had a double-double for South with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Bruins will try to bounce back on Tuesday as they head into the final week of the regular season at Wahpeton in a 7 PM start time on Tuesday.
