For the third time in a number of recent games, the Bruins played well in the first half of a game, but did not finish the job in the second half and the game against the North Spartans got away from them and the result was a 63-41 loss at home on Tuesday night. The Bruins were ice cold from the field all night, but stayed in the game in the first half thanks to limiting their turnovers and playing solid defense. Desptite falling behind 14-5 early, the Bruins scrapped back into it and a Brooklyn Klein three pointer tied the game at 19-19 with 4:30 left to go, but the baskets came few and far between after that. South managed only 4 more points over the next 15 minutes of action stretching into the second half. The Bruins trailed 22-21 at half and were playing well despite not shooting well. South controlled their defensive glass and had only 7 first half turnovers. In the second though, the Bruins struggled out of the locker room. An inside basket on a nice cut by Maggie Boese was the Bruins only points of the second half until there was only 7:30 left in the game, and by that time the Spartans had built the lead to over 20 points and the outcome was not in doubt. South needs to find a way to get a full 36 minutes of good play in, instead of just in spurts. Anna Brakke had a nice game for South as she finished with 16 points and 6 rebounds, both team highs, and also just played very hard the whole game, as did really all of the Bruins. It wasn't a case of not playing hard, South just seemed to spin their wheels the whole second half. South hosts Grand Forks Central on Friday night.
