Bruins season ends with loss at North

Fargo South played defense almost exactly like they had game planned for, but in the end, could not put enough points on the board to pull out a win in the EDC play-in game on Saturday afternoon. Defending well and rebound well kept South in the game for a large part of the first half, although the Spartans had a mini-run late in the half to extend to a 23-14 lead. Trailing 25-16 with 38 seconds left before halftime, the Bruins missed out on a chance to make it a 7 point game at half, but their shot spun out, and the Spartans nailed a three pointer right before the halftime buzzer, and the Bruins trailed 28-16 at half instead. That 5 point turnaround in the last minute of the half was unfortunate as the Bruins played well enough to be closer than the score indicated, but that is the rub of basketball. The first 2 possessions of the second half also were tough for the Bruins as the Spartans scored 2 quick baskets to take a 32-16 lead, but the Bruins bounced back as Adie Wagner hit Brynn Nelson on a nice backdoor layup, and then Wagner scored on a driving left handed layup to get those 4 points back and South was right back in it at 32-20. The next few minutes were the difference makers in the game however. South's defense kept putting stops together, as they denied the Spartans a point for 8 straight possessions - that was the big window of opportunity to get back into the game, but instead of chipping away at the lead, the Bruins on the offensive end had 7 straight turnovers, and the result was 4 scoreless minutes of basketball, the game was still tied 32-20, and the Bruins chances to get back in the game slipped away. The Spartans finally broke the lid on the basket and extended their lead out to 41-22 with 11 minutes to go. The Bruins didn't quit though. Naiya Karl had an offensive rebound basket plus got fouled, Anna Brakke hit a three pointer, and Adie Wagner hit a variety of baskets plus got to the freethrow line, and with just under 2 minutes to go South trailed 54-41. However that was as close as South could get as the Spartans made freethrows down the stretch to keep the Bruins at arms length and hold on to the 59-46 win. Wagner led all scorers with 24 points.
