Bruins show glimpses, but can't put it all together vs top team in EDC

Fargo South had some nice stretches of basketball, but couldn't sustain them, and the result was a 75-50 loss to the #2 ranked Shanley Deacons on Friday night in the Bruins gym. Turnovers again proved costly early, as South committed 8 givaways in the first 5 minutes of action, with almost all of them leading directly to Deacon points. The Deacons jumped out to an 8-0 lead, also helped out by the fact the Bruins missed their first 4 freethrow attempts as well in the opening few minutes. South battled back though. Anna Brakke hit a driving layup and Adie Wagner hit a three pointer and South was back in it. However, the Bruins lost track of Deacon post player Cierra Berg too many times defensively, as Berg got a number of three point plays and easy putbacks to stretch the Deacon lead out late in the half. Sami Hoselton sparked South with her hustle plays though as she grabbed 3 offensive rebounds almost exclusively with floor burns to boot. Adie Wagner got things going too, as she scored on a pair of nice transition hoops and had a great diagonal pass to Paige Schroeder for a basket against the Shanley half court trap. With those keys helping, South stayed within shouting distance and trailed 44-24 at halftime. In the second half it was again different stretches. South maintained pace for a while, thanks to a pair of driving baskets by Hoselton, but then the Bruins had a poor 5 minute stretch where the Deacons extended the lead back out. However, the Bruins fought hard until the final buzzer, including some good driving attacks to the basket by Brakke and some hi-lite worthy transition baskets by Wagner, and were able to take some positives away from the night. Adie Wagner led the Bruins with 15 points, while Anna Brakke joined her in double figures with 13. Hoselton led South with 10 rebounds and also had a pair of steals and a pair of assists to go along with her great all-out energy game. The Bruins are now off for over 10 days as they do not hit the floor again until January 16 when they host Valley City.
