Rebounds, turnovers haunt Bruins in loss

Fargo South did a lot of things well, but in the end, too many turnovers and too many Hi-liner offensive rebounds spelled doom for the Bruins as they fell 61-45 in the season finale on Thursday night in Valley City. South fell behind 7-0 to start the game before Maggie Boese got the Bruins on the board. Anna Brakke scored a short time later on a driving basket to make it 10-4 Valley City, but that's when Emmerie Beyer went on a personal 15 point scoring streak. Beyer hit 4 three pointers and had a conventional three point play all in very short order to give South a 21-15 lead with 6 minutes to go before halftime. Unfortunately for the Bruins though, those would be the last points of the half as the Hi-Liners closed out the first half on a 20-0 run to take a 35-21 lead at the break. South had 17 first half turnovers to hinder their efforts to stay close. In the second half, the Bruins got things going the right direction again as Anna Brakke started the half with a three point play to cut the lead to 35-24. The teams played even after that until the 5 minute mark of the game where the Bruins found themselves trailing 50-40. However South could not chip into that lead as they gave up too many putback baskets in the closing 5 minutes, the last coming in the final 30 seconds to ice the game. In all, the Bruins gave up 19 second chance points on the game and turned the ball over 27 times. Beyer led the Bruins in scoring with 15 points, while Boese led South with 8 rebounds. Fargo South will play Saturday at 1 PM at Fargo North in the East Region play-in game.
