Bruins bounce back with important win against Wahpeton

In a very entertaining game that went back and forth the whole night, Fargo South held off the Wahpeton Huskies 70-60 on Thursday night in the Bruins gym. The Bruins held the lead for the entire game, but the final score was as wide as the margin got the entire night, so every possession seemed huge as the two teams battled for all 36 minutes. South got off to a quick start on an Emmerie Beyer three pointer, then Sami Hoselton hit a pair of free throws to give South a 5-0 lead, and that was pretty much the difference the rest of the way. The difference in the game tonight though was the Bruins ability to have ball security, an issue which has plagued South all season. In this game though, South only had 12 turnovers, and the result was 2 big scoring halves, including a 40 point opening half, as South took a 40-34 lead at halftime. Beyer and Adie Wagner both had huge first halves as Beyer tossed in 12 first half points, and Wagner got things rolling in a big way as she dropped in 15 first half points. However, this win was a total team effort. It seemed like every time Wahpeton made a big basket and looked to be on the verge of narrowing the gap, the Bruins had someone step up and make a positive play. Alice Carlson took a charge, Maggie Boese and Paige Schroeder both had some big offensive rebounds, Sami Hoselton nailed 3 big shots coming down the stretch on top of her usual all out effort, Anna Brakke hit a number of driving shots, Brooklyn Klein and Naiya Karl gave some very important minutes on the court, and Brynn Nelson came in early and nailed two big shots including a three pointer off an inbounds play. The Bruins just never gave up momentum or control of the game. After the Huskies hit a shot to cut the lead to 66-60 with a minute to play, both Anna Brakke and Adie Wagner went two for two from the line to ice the game and South was able to enjoy the home court win. South put 3 girls in double figure scoring as Brakke had 11, Beyer 14, and Wagner had just a great overall game with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and only turned the ball over 3 times. South improves to 2-7 in the EDC. Next action is Saturday night when South hosts Sheyenne in a 7 PM tipoff game.
