Bruins lose shoot-out in Wahpeton

Fargo South played well enough to win the game, but couldn't quite overcome 2 tough stretches of the game and came out on the short end of a 73-71 game down in Wahpeton. The Bruins got off to a nice start as Brynn Nelson and Anna Brakke combined for 10 early points for South, each with a three and a two. After the Huskies battled back, the Bruins went on another run which included a three pointer and foul by Brooklyn Klein, giving South a 21-12 lead. Adie Wagner then got hot for South, nailing a pair of threes and freethrows, and South had built a 29-18 lead with just over 5 minutes to play before halftime. But those last 5 minutes would be the first of two tough stretches for South. The Bruins gave up 18 points in the last 5 minutes, mostly from the freethrow line, and trailed 36-34 at halftime. In the second, the Bruins started well again, building a lead of 46-42 off a great hustle play where Paige Schroeder and Brooklyn Klein combined for 2 falling out of bounds saves and the result was a Maggie Boese assist to Wagner. Wagner later went coast to coast on a rebound, scored and drew a foul, and with just under 10 minutes to go gave the Bruins a 53-48 lead. South had a chance to extend that, but a three pointer bounced out and on the resulting run out by Wahpeton, they scored and were fouled, making a 6 point swing and tying the game up at 53-53. As the teams traded baskets over the next few minutes the game set up for an exciting finish as it was tied at 61-61 with 5:30 to go. However, that started the second stretch of tough basketball for South, as the Huskies scored 9 quick points on a pair of threes and freethrows, and build a 70-61 lead with 3 minutes to go. However, the Bruins still had some fight left in them. An inside basket by Boese cut it to 70-63, but that was matched by the Huskies to make it 72-63 with 2:30 to go. Emmerie Beyer then hit 2 huge back to back three pointers to cut the lead to 72-69 with 1:30 to play. A steal by Beyer led to a pair of Adie Wagner freethrows, and just like that it was 72-71 with just over a minute to go. The Bruins had multiple chances to take the lead, but 2 shots were missed and 3 turnovers happened in the last minute and South couldn't grab the lead. After fouling with 8 seconds left, the Huskies made one freethrow to go up 73-71, but missed the second, and South had one last chance but a driving shot just bounced out right before the final buzzer sounded. Adie Wagner led the Bruins with 22 points and was joined in double figures by the 14 of Anna Brakke and 12 of Brynn Nelson. Paige Schroeder for the 2nd straight game had double figure rebounds as she grabbed 11 boards on the night. South concludes their regular season Thursday night in Valley City.
