Bruins improve but still fall in home opener

Fargo South got off to a good start, played well in stretches, but a a tough few minutes midway through the opening half, and a scoring draught to open the second half allowed the Davies Eagles to claim a 70-52 win on Tuesday night. South jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a three pointer by Brynn Nelson and a nice driving hoop by Adie Wagner. An inside basket by Maggie Boese with 12 minutes to go gave South an 11-8 lead. Overall in the opening 10 minutes, the Bruins played pretty steady basketball. Paige Schroeder continued her very solid play as she was playing good defense, grabbing rebounds, and also put some points on the board. However, a cold offensive stretch over the middle 6 minutes allowed the Eagles to build a lead on the strength of their good three point shooting, nailing 11 threes for the game. But Adie Wagner kept the Bruins in it, knocking down two deep threes in short order with 5 minutes to go before half. The Eagles ended up taking a 38-23 halftime lead. Unfortunately for South, they did not score in the first 5 minutes of the second half, and Eagles streched their lead. The Bruins didn't quit though, and were able to get things going to close things up as the half wore on. Wagner was able to get rolling, scoring a number of driving baskets and also dished out a number of nifty assists, but in the end, the Bruins didn't quite have enough and fell to 0-2 on the season. Wagner led the Bruins with 21 points, while Schroeder had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Next action for South is Friday when they travel up to pre-season favorite Devils Lake.
