Mixed bag for Bruins in loss to Deacons

The Bruins started out pretty much the way they wanted to, but 2 ugly stretches in the first half spelled doom for South in a 75-42 loss at the Shanley gym on Tuesday night. Paige Schroeder scored inside and Brynn Nelson hit a three pointer to give South a 5-2 lead to start the game, and for the opening 5 minutes of the game, the Bruins held the lead at 5-4 as defensively they were executing their game plan just fine. However as has been the case for too many games this season, the turnover battle was lost over the next few minutes. Shanley converted on a string of Bruin turnovers, and went on a 13-3 run to pull ahead 17-8 just 2 minutes later. South tried to hang in there though. Nelson hit her second three and Adie Wagner hit a nice driving coast to coast shot followed up by a three pointer, and with 6:16 to go before halftime, the game was still within reach at 28-16 Shanley. However, the last 6 minutes was a turnover fest for South and the result was the Deacons closing out the half on a 19-0 run to take a huge 47-16 lead into halftime. In the second half, Adie Wagner raised her game up, as she was responsible for all but 6 of South's second half points, dropping in 16 second half points and assisting on 2 other baskets. Wagner led South with 21 points on the night while also grabbing 7 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists and had 2 steals. Wagner has now gone over 20 points in 4 straight games, something which has not been done since February of 2011 when Meghan Roehrich accomplished a streak of 4 in a row. Paige Schroeder also set a personal best by grabbing 17 rebounds. Next action for South, pending weather, is Thursday night at home against Grand Forks Red River.
