Fargo South squandered two different double-digit leads on Friday night, and the result was a crucial 64-54 loss to Grand Forks Central in a battle between teams fighting for homecourt advantage in the East Region play-in game. Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the opening 5 minutes, playing to a 4-4 tie, but eventually the Bruins got things going on that end. Adie Wagner hit a three pointer and made a conventional three point play, and Brynn Nelson hit a three as well to help push South out to a 13-4 advantage. With just over 3 minutes to go before halftime, Wagner hit Sami Hoselton on a long pass over the press, and her basket gave the Bruins their biggest lead at 27-13. South still led 27-15 with two and a half minutes to go before half, but the tide of the game turned in those last 2 minutes as the Knights scored the last 9 points of the half to make it only a 27-22 halftime lead for South. In the second half, South again was able to build up the lead as a nice drop pass from Alice Carlson to Ann Smith gave the Bruins a 34-24 lead with 14 minutes to go. However, that's when Knights junior Haley Gereau took over. The junior took over inside, forcing extra help which led to open perimeter shots for Central. Gereau finished with a game high 30 points on the night. Raechel Osborn hit a pair of threes in the second half to help hold off the Knights charge, but Central was able to climb all the way back in, and with 4 minutes to go the game was tied at 52-52. Unfortunately for the Bruins, Ann Smith fouled out, and then on a very difficult call, Adie Wagner also fouled out, and after surrending the lead, South had to foul at the end to try stay in it, but it just didn't pan out. Wagner led the Bruins with 22 points, joined in double figures by Sami Hoselton with 11. Next action for South is Tuesday when they travel to Shanley as part of a girl-boy double header.
