Cold shooting plagues Bruins in loss

The Bruins battled like crazy all game long on Friday night, but in the end couldn't put the ball in the basket enough times and the result was a 46-35 loss at Red River. The Bruins fell behind 13-0 to start the game and in years past that may have led to an ugly loss, but as has been the case a number of times already, the Bruins righted the ship and made it a competitive game right until the very end. South had a number of good looks at the hoop in the opening half, but just could not connect on very many shots. Sami Hoselton had a basket inside and had a nice assist to Paige Schroeder to help keep South close at 17-6 midway through the opening half, however Schroeder had to sit a large chunk of the half with foul trouble. Mary Chol came in off the bench and did an admirable job inside in her most extended varsity time of the year. After the Riders pushed that lead up to 26-9, South closed out the half on a 7-0 run. Brynn Nelson scored a three point play, Adie Wagner made a pair of freethrows off a drive to the hoop, and Alice Carlson had a steal and great assist to Nelson for a layup right before the halftime buzzer, and just like that South was back in the game, trailing 26-16 at halftime. Their defense carried the way for South as they mangaged to muck things up inside against the bigger Rider post players for most of the game. South opened the second half on a nice hi-low pass from Nelson to Schroeder, cutting the lead to single digits at 26-18. The Bruins had the deficit at 8 points with a chance to get closer multiple times throughout the second half, but could never quite catch fire on offense to make a run. Laura Green hit a pull-up shot to make it 29-21 with 13 minutes to go. Wagner hit a three pointer with 10 minutes to go to make it 32-24 as the Bruins kept grinding away. Nelson hit an inside shot to make it 41-30 with 5 minutes left. Another 3 by Wagner with just under 2 minutes to go made it a 42-33 game, but South couldn't get any closer. Wagner and Nelson each hit double figures with 10 points each, while Hoselton came off the bench big with 10 rebounds, 4 points, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Overall, South just played very scrappy the entire night but unfortunately could not overcome a 21% shooting night. Next action for South is December 28 when they return to Grand Forks to take on the Central Knights.
