Bruins drop a hard fought game in Valley City

The Bruins played very good basketball on Friday night, but a 28% field goal percentage and 46% free throw percentage kept them out of the win column in Valley City, as they dropped a 61-51 decision to the Hi-Liners. For the second game in a row, the Bruins were solid in two key categories, defensive rebounding and turnovers. South allowed only 3 second chance points on the night, and had only 13 turnovers for the game, both great improvements from some previous games over the last few weeks. They also executed their defensive strategy well and for the most part things felt under control. But unfortunately, they just could not seem to get the ball to drop in the basket, with the exception of Laura Green, who hit on 5 of 8 three point attempts and really kept the Bruins in the game in the opening half, hitting on 4 of those shots in the period. South jumped out on top 6-0, fell behind 27-13, but clawed back into it at 29-22, and trailed 34-25 at halftime. In the second half, the Bruins had a tough 2 minute opening stretch, falling behind 41-25 very quickly forcing a timeout, but they regrouped and fought their way back into the game. Defensive stops keyed a run by South, and a Brynn Nelson three pointer, followed up by a steal and layup by Sami Hoselton cut the lead to 44-37 midway through the half. South had it at 47-41 and had multiple chances to keep cutting into the lead, but could not get the basket to get it down to a 1 possession game. In the end, the Bruins could never quite close the gap enough and the result was the ten point loss. Adie Wagner led South with 17 points, followed up by Laura Green's 15. The Bruins head into the final week of the regular season facing Sheyenne on Tuesday and Wahpeton on Thursday.
