Fargo South battled a raucus crowd, a little bit of foul trouble, and a very scrappy Wahpeton Husky team, and came away with a very difficult 56-51 win on Friday night in the Wahpeton gym. The Bruins got off to a quick start, building a 7-2 lead in part to a three pointer by Adie Wagner, and a traditional 3 point play by Paige Schroeder. South did a nice job defensively in the opening half, limiting the Huskies to mainly one shot attempt, and had very active hands, grabbing away 15 steals on the night, a season high in that category. The Bruins built a 19-14 lead, then closed out the half on an 11-3 run, capped off by Wagner's fourth three of the half, taking a 30-17 lead into halftime. But Wahpeton fought back hard in the second half, making a number of different runs at the Bruins, but each time the Huskies made a play to get the team and crowd ramped up, South was able to answer with a big play of their own. With the Bruin leading scorer sidelined with foul issues, a number of Bruins stepped up to make things happen. Sami Hoselton was everywhere, grabbing rebounds, getting tips, and just harassing the Husky players. Alice Carlson and Laura Green hit threes, Brynn Nelson had a huge steal, offensive rebound and basket, and Ann Smith made a huge steal and finished the breakaway layup with a tough contested lefty layup, all in the middle minutes of the half. As the game came down to crunch time, the Bruins kept fighting off the Huskies who chipped away at the lead, and pulled to within 48-46 with 3 minutes to play, but that's where the Bruins grabbed control again. South was able to get some key rebounds and knock down freethrows to keep Wahpeton at arms length, and held on to the hard fought win. Wagner led the Bruins with 21 points, while Schroeder scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Next action for South is Saturday afternoon when they go north to take on the Spartans.
