Fargo South and Grand Forks Central battled back and forth the whole game before South put together a sparkling final 6 minutes to earn a hard fought 69-56 win on Saturday afternoon in the EDC regional qualifing game in the Bruin gym. Both teams showed some signs of some jitters early on with a number of turnovers, but the game smoothed out as it went along in a first half filled with mini-runs by both teams. Central held an 11-7 lead early, but then South went on a 10-0 run sparked by a pair of three pointers by Laura Green and a steal and layup by Adie Wagner to put the Bruins up 17-11. The Knights then rallied to take the lead late in the half and a pair of Wagner freethrow right before halftime sent the teams to the lockerroom tied at 26-26. South scored the first 4 points of the half to take a 30-26 lead, but again the Knights rallied back. South had a tough time over the next several minutes and things were not looking great for South as the Knights built a 5 point lead on two different occassions just over midway through the half but that's when South started to heat up. Brynn Nelson made a tough inside hoop and that was followed by a steal and pull up three pointer from Wagner giving South a 50-49 lead with 5 minutes to go. The teams traded hoops on another Nelson basket, but South finally took the lead for good at 55-53 on another Wagner three and after a freethrow by Central cut it to 55-54, Alice Carlson hit a three to give South a 58-54 lead with 2:40 to go. The last 2 minutes belonged to Adie Wagner though, as the junior scored on 3 straight driving baskets to put the game in hand. South went 7-8 from the freethrow line to ice the game and advance to play Devils Lake on Tuesday night. Wagner led everyone with 31 points but South got good balanced scoring from 8 different players. Paige Schroeder grabbed double figure rebounds, grabbing 11 for the game.
