Fargo South battled against a box and one defense for almost the entire game on Thursday, built a solid lead late only to have Fargo North come all the way back to tie the game, then made hay in the last 40 seconds to earn a hard fought 52-49 win over the Spartans in front of a great crowd on senior night. Alice Carlson hit a pair of threes to help stake South to an 8-4 lead to start the game vs the chaser defense of the Spartans but the teams battled back and forth for most of the half. At halfime the game was tied at 23-23. The Bruins then got some things going after the half. The Bruins began to wrestle control of the game as Brynn Nelson scored on a nice backdoor pass from Paige Schroeder, Adie Wagner had a pair of coast to coast hoops, then hit Alice Carlson on a three in transition, forcing a Spartan time out and pushing the Bruin lead to 36-27 with just under 12 minutes to play. The Bruins continued their solid play after that with a Teigan Malo basket inside and a Laura Green three pointer, building up a 41-29 lead with just under 9 minutes to play. South's biggest lead came on an Ann Smith freethrow immediately following a three from Adie Wagner, and South led 47-33 with 5 minutes to go. The Spartans came on strong from there though. With South holding a 49-40 lead with just over 2 minutes to play, North went on a 9-0 run over the next 47 seconds to tie the game up at 49-49 with 1:15 to go. The Bruins were not going to let one slip away on senior night though. Paige Schroeder made a go ahead baseline jumper with 40 seconds to go making it 51-49, and the Bruins got a big stop on defense that led to them making a freethrow to extend to a 52-49 lead with 4 seconds left. The Spartans did get a last shot off, but it missed and South came away with the hard fought win. Wagner led the Bruins with 18 points and 8 rebounds. South finishes the regular season at 8-13, and will host Grand Forks Central on Saturday at 4:30 PM in an EDC play-in game.
