Fargo South battled back from a dismal shooting performance in the opening half to force overtime, but fell 53-52 in the end to Valley City on Friday night. South was ice cold in the first half, connecting on only 4 field goals, 3 of them from Brynn Nelson, and shooting 14%. The result, a 26-12 halftime deficit. Compounding the problem was the Bruins inability to control their defensive boards, giving the Hi-Liners 9 second chance points in that opening half. South started to get things going though, as they scored on their first two possessions on an Adie Wagner three pointer and then a nice fast break basket by Ann Smith to make it 26-17 and it was game on. Wagner hit another three to make it 26-20, and shortly after Laura Green hit a three to make it 28-25 with 11 minutes remaining. The teams battled back and forth over the next few minutes with neither team able to take control. Valley City pushed the lead out to 43-36 with 6 minutes to go. South trimmed the lead to 43-41 on Wagner's three and then Paige Schroeder's basket with 3:20 to play tied the game at 45-45. Wagner gave the Bruins their first lead of the game on a driving layup, making it 47-45 with 2:45 to go. After a Hi-Liner basket tied it back up, Sami Hoselton hit an elbow shot to give South the lead again at 49-47 with 1 minute to go, and the Bruins got the ball right back on a steal, but then could not convert to go up 2 scores and Valley tied the game back up with under 20 seconds to go. The Bruins could not get a shot off in the closing seconds, and the game headed to overtime. In that session, the Hi-Liners scored first to go up 51-49 and it stayed that way until Brynn Nelson hit a huge three to give South a 52-51 lead with under a minute to go. The rebounding bug hit South hard though, as Valley scored on an offensive putback with 20 seconds left to go up 53-52. South appeared to be ready to hit a game winner, but Adie Wagner was fouled driving to the hoop with 4 seconds left, but Valley was not in the bonus yet so the Bruins had one last chance with an underneath out of bounds play, but a contested last second shot did not go in, and Valley prevailed by that 53-52 score. South misses out on a chance to get back to .500 and falls to 7-9 on the year. Next action is Tuesday when the Bruins host Sheyenne.
