Bruins survive scare by Knights, win in overtime

Fargo South showed some resiliancy on Friday night, trailing most of the game including being down by 7 points with 3 minutes to go in regulation and being down by 4 points with under 90 seconds to go in overtime, but found a way to fight back to grab a victory over the visiting Grand Forks Central Knights 57-55 to even up their season record at 6-6. At halftime, the game was knotted up at 24-24, setting the stage for an exciting second half. South scored first in the second half to give them a 26-24 lead, and that was South's largest lead of the game. The Knights took a 29-28 lead with just under 13 minutes to go, and held that lead for most of the remainder of the game. A bucket by the Knights gave them their biggest lead at 45-37 with 4 and a half minutes to go, and things did not look great for the Bruins. But sophomore Teigan Malo closed out the game with a flourish - Teigan scored on an offensive rebound putback and on a great pass from Adie Wagner to cut the deficit to 46-41 with just over 3 minutes to go, then made a freethrow and later scored on another putback basket with 2 minutes to go to make it a 46-44 game. The teams traded defensive stops for the rest of regulation until late in the game. Central had the ball coming out of a time out with 16 seconds to play, but Brynn Nelson made a huge defensive play by forcing a jump ball, and the Bruins had their chance. Adie Wagner was fouled on a driving shot attempt with 4 seconds to go and calmly made both freethrows to send the game into overtime at 46-46. In overtime, the Knights drilled a three pointer to open the scoring, but that was quickly answered by a Brynn Nelson basket to make it 49-48 Central with just over 2 minutes remaining. Central scored another basket and made a freethrow to push out to a 52-48 lead with 1:30 left to go, and again things did not look great for South. However, Wagner found junior Grace Hoselton in the corner for a huge three pointer to keep the Bruins alive at 52-51 with a minute to go. A freethrow with 37 seconds left by Central made it 53-51, and then Teigan Malo her clutch play by getting another putback basket to tie the game at 53-53 with 22 seconds left, and then followed that up by grabbing a defensive rebound, getting fouled in the process, and draining both freethrows to give South a temporary 55-53 lead with 14 seconds left. The Knights made a clutch play of their own, drawing a foul and making both freethrows as well to make it a 55-55 game with 7 seconds left. The Bruin left the game in the hands of their all time leading scorer though, and Adie Wagner drove the length of the floor and was fouled with 0.5 seconds left in the game and knocked down both freethrows to give South the 57-55 win. Whew! Next action for the Bruins is Tuesday night when they host Shanley in the second game of a boy-girl double header. Malo led South with 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Wagner and Nelson joined her in double figure scoring with 18 and 10 respectively.
