Bruins defeat Spartans, Wagner goes over 2000 points

Fargo South got a very important win, playing well in all areas, to defeat cross town rival Fargo North on Tuesday night 64-44 and in the process had senior Adie Wagner hit a huge milestone, dropping in a game high 26 points and breaking the 2000 career point mark, only the 6th Class A player to do so. The Bruins got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 6-0 and 11-2 lead early on. The Spartans battled back though, and a three pointer gave North a 16-15 lead with just under 6 minutes to go in the half. South rallied right back though as 4 quick points from Wagner gave South the lead right back at 19-16, and the Bruins did not trail again. At half the Bruins led 25-21 and continued to stretch that lead out to start the second half. A three pointer by Brynn Nelson, three freethrows by Adie Wagner, and a driving basket by Grace Hoselton immediately pushed South out to a 33-21 lead and gave South a nice cushion to work with. A beautiful assist by Wagner to Teigan Malo and a three by Wagner gave the Bruins their biggest lead of the game at 44-26 with just over 11 minutes to go. North did not go away though, as they rattled off 8 straight points over the next 3 minutes to cut the lead back to 44-34. That however set the stage for a huge basket by Adie Wagner. The senior bombed in a 27 footer to give her 2000 career points, and the celebration during the time out recognition in front of a very large crowd seemed to really spark South over the next few minutes as they went on a 17-1 run to grab control of the game at 61-35 with 4 minutes left and held on from there. It was quite the night for Wagner as she ended up with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. Brynn Nelson also was strong for South with a 17 point, 9 rebound night. South snaps a 4 game losing streak and improves to 5-6 on the year. Next action for the Bruins is Friday night when they host Grand Forks Central.
